Mt. Sherman

Height: 14,036
Range: Mosquito
Date: May 27, 2006

In May I decided to try an early season 14er. Sherman is pretty easy, and the weather was great so I took the dogs and headed for South Park. Above is a panoramic shot from the summit, you can see the Twin Lakes and several other fourteeners in the Sawatch range on the western side of the mountain. To the right is Pedro and below he is making his way up a steep snow field. The hike was pretty uneventful on the way up as we made good time, and then we met several other parties on the summit. The descent was another matter though!

Above is a shot of me and the dogs on the summit. about half way down I decided to try to glisade down a pretty long and steep snow field. We would have to drop ove a cornice to get onto the snow, and I didnt know how soft the snow would be so that we could arrest ourselves. So i threw Pedro over the cornice and he landed about 15 ft down and stopped pretty quickly after a few rolls. Then I pushed Dazey over and jumped in after her. At first I kept them in front of me, but about half way down I passed Dazey. Pedro kept running along side me but Dazey stopped and would not get going again - she was terrified. There is a pic to the left. So Pedro and I had to hike back up this steep snow bank. I grabbed Dazey by the collar and made her slide down on her back. Below is a shot of one of the old mine shacks on the mountain.
