Mt. Bierstadt

Height: 14,080
Range: Front
Date: September 6, 2005

Well it was Labor day weekend and I wanted to get one more fourteener in before the weather turned cod. Bear and Lisa had been talking about trying one, so I picked an easy one and we headed for the hills. Biersdadt is not only one of the easier fourteeners, its also one of the closest to Denver being in the front range. The trailhead is at Guinella pass which is just South of Georgetown near I-70. Since it was going to be a quick and easy hike, we brought the dogs along, both Pedro and Barley were doing their first fourteener as well. Here are some pics on the way up looking back down on the 'Willows' a marshy area covering the first part of the hike. There have been bridges built in recent years to make it easier to get through this area without getting into too much mud or water.

We blazed up the trail which was crowded with dozens of hikers. I think it onlyn took us about two and a half hours to get to the summit. Above are some shots of Derock and Pedro on the trail on the way up, and left is a pic of the Meiring family at the top. Pedro wore his backpack and carried his own water for the first time. He managed it pretty well, but near the toop when we started boulder hopping, he would occasionally get stuck between some rocks because of the bulk of the backpack. So I took the water out of the pack and he was fine. Barley really enjoyed running off the trail, especially at the lower elevations near the Willows - I think he hiked about twice the distance we did.

Above are shots of Donnie, Barley, Pedro, and Lisa aon the summit. We had a snack at the summit and talked to some of the many hikers. We also were able to look across at Mt. Evans and see the people that had driven up to 14,000 ft. Mt Evans is the only fourteener with a paved road all the way to the top. Its the highest altitude paved road in the world. To the right is a shot of Donnie and Pedro with Bierstadt in the background taken at the trailhead after we had descended. We enjoyed the quick trip back home and got ready for our gig at bears neighborhood party later that evening.
